School Reopening Dates and Full Academic Calendar for 2026

As the festive season comes to an end, parents, learners, and teachers across the country are preparing for the start of the 2026 academic year.

After nearly two months of the December holiday, millions of learners are expected to return to school in early January.

The reopening marks the beginning of a busy academic cycle for learners in pre-primary, primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools, as well as universities and other tertiary institutions.
Schools to Open Early January

According to the official academic calendar released by the Ministry of Education, all basic education institutions will reopen for the first term on January 5, 2026.

The ministry indicated that the long December holiday officially ends before January 10, allowing schools adequate time to resume learning activities smoothly.

The first term will run for 13 weeks, with schools scheduled to close on April 2, 2026, ahead of the April holidays.

Half-Term Break Dates

The Ministry of Education also confirmed that the first term will include a half-term break. The break will take place between February 25 and March 1, 2026, giving learners and teachers a five-day rest period before resuming studies.

This mid-term break is meant to help learners recharge during the long first term, which is often considered one of the busiest in the academic year.

April Holiday and Second Term Dates

After the first term ends in early April, learners will proceed for a three-week April holiday. Schools are expected to reopen for the second term on April 27, 2026.

The ministry noted that institutions should strictly adhere to the set calendar to ensure smooth learning and proper planning of national examinations and assessments.

A Unique Year for CBC Learners

The 2026 academic year will be particularly significant as the pioneer group of learners under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system transitions to junior secondary school.

According to the Ministry of Education, the first cohort of Grade 10 learners will report to their respective junior secondary schools on January 12, 2026.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed that over 1.13 million learners sat for the national assessment, including 578,630 boys and 551,829 girls, marking a major milestone in the education transition.

Strict Admission Guidelines Issued

The ministry issued clear guidelines on the admission of Grade 10 learners, directing all public and private schools to use the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS).

Schools have been warned against enrolling learners into the system before they physically report to school.

“No principal shall enter a learner into KEMIS before he or she reports physically. Daily online reporting will be closely monitored,” the ministry stated.

Parents Urged to Prepare Early

While learners may be excited to return to school, the reopening period is often demanding for parents and guardians.

Many families are using the remaining days of the holiday to buy uniforms, textbooks, and other learning materials.

Education officials have encouraged parents to prepare early and ensure learners report to school on time to avoid disruptions at the start of the term.
