RIP: Last Painful Request a Secondary School Teacher Made Before He Died in Kisumu CBD

A cloud of grief has engulfed Kisumu County following the mysterious death of Maricus Owino, a mathematics teacher at Lela Secondary School, whose body was found at a mortuary days after he disappeared.

Owino had reportedly survived a hit-and-run motorcycle accident near Kisumu Boys’ Gate, close to Aga Khan Hospital, but never received proper treatment.

According to his wife, Scholastica Achieng Odhiambo, her husband was taken to Kisumu County Referral Hospital (KCRH) by good Samaritans who found him injured but conscious.

Upon arrival at the hospital, confusion arose between the people who brought him in and the medical staff.

Each side gave different accounts of what had happened, and without identification or a phone, Owino could not be registered for treatment.

Those who had accompanied him also allegedly refused to give their details.

Reports indicate that the acquaintances later contacted his family and were instructed to remain at the hospital until relatives arrived.

However, instead of waiting or taking Owino to Aga Khan Hospital as he had requested, they left KCRH with him at around 6:59 p.m.

They later informed his brother that they had placed him in a Kibos Route 7-11 matatu and asked the conductor to drop him at Kamakaa Stage along Kibos Road so he could head home.

For days, his family searched hospitals and police stations, clinging to hope that he was still alive.

Their worst fears were confirmed when his body was discovered at a Kisumu mortuary.

Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family has appealed for justice and answers on how an injured man could vanish while under the care of strangers.

May his soul rest in peace.
