Matatu Torched After Fatal Crash Claims Life of Boda Boda Rider

A 14-seater matatu was set ablaze by angry boda boda riders on Wednesday, December 31, following a deadly road accident along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway at Gitaru.

The incident occurred after the matatu was involved in a collision with a motorcycle, killing a 22-year-old boda boda rider on the spot.

The young rider was reportedly transporting a carpet at the time of the accident.

Witnesses at the scene said the matatu hit the motorcycle while attempting to make a turn at what locals described as a dangerous section of the highway.

The impact was fatal, triggering outrage among fellow motorcycle operators in the area.

Moments after the accident, boda boda riders blocked the highway, bringing traffic to a standstill. In a fit of anger, they vandalised and later set the matatu on fire, leaving it completely destroyed.

Video footage circulating online showed the vehicle engulfed in flames as members of the public watched from a distance.

The incident caused heavy traffic disruption along the key transport corridor for several hours.

The matatu is believed to be operated by NNK SACCO, though authorities had not issued an official statement on the ownership by the time of publishing.

The Gitaru incident closely followed a similar case reported earlier in December along the same Nairobi–Nakuru highway in Salgaa, Nakuru County.

In that case, boda boda riders torched a Kampala-bound bus after it was allegedly involved in an accident that killed two people riding a motorcycle.

During the Salgaa incident, witnesses said some riders smashed the bus windows before setting it on fire, forcing pedestrians and motorists to flee the scene.

The bus driver reportedly escaped unharmed, but traffic remained gridlocked for more than two hours.

Following the Salgaa violence, the Motorists Association of Kenya strongly condemned the destruction of vehicles and called on the National Police Service to take action against those involved.

Road safety experts have repeatedly warned about reckless driving, dangerous road sections, and rising tensions between motorists and boda boda riders, especially along major highways.

Authorities are yet to confirm whether arrests were made following the Gitaru incident as investigations continue.
