Oburu Odinga, the elder brother of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has made a shocking revelation about what happened at Kasarani Stadium when Raila’s body arrived from India.
Speaking during an interview, Oburu said the police used tear gas to distract mourners while the military secretly swapped Raila’s coffin.
He explained that when the plane carrying Raila’s body landed, thousands of supporters flooded the runway at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), making it impossible to carry out the planned body preparations.
According to Oburu, the original plan was to take Raila’s body to Lee Funeral Home for treatment and preparation before the public viewing.
However, the large crowd that gathered at the airport made movement difficult, and the security team decided to head directly to Kasarani.
When the body arrived at the stadium, doctors were already waiting to prepare Raila for viewing.
But because the crowd was too emotional and uncontrollable, they could not perform the procedure in public. That is when the police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
During the confusion, the military and doctors quickly moved in, changed Raila’s clothes, and placed his body in a different casket meant for the official ceremony.
“People thought the tear gas was to control the crowd, but it was actually a cover-up for the body preparation,” Oburu said.
He added that the change was necessary because Raila’s body had not been properly treated after the long journey from India.
The doctors worked swiftly under military protection to ensure that the former Prime Minister looked peaceful and dignified before being presented to the nation.
Oburu said the family did not expect such a huge turnout both at the airport and at Kasarani.
“We underestimated Kenyans’ love for my brother,” he admitted, noting that the emotional reaction showed how deeply Raila was loved and respected.
He concluded by thanking Kenyans for their patience and understanding during the chaotic moments, urging them to remain united as the nation mourns a leader who dedicated his life to democracy and justice.
Oburu’s statement has stirred mixed reactions online, with many Kenyans expressing surprise at how the tear gas chaos was used to manage the situation at Kasarani.
