"You Can’t Campaign for Ruto in Raila’s Party" Tough-Talking Sifuna Tells ODM Leaders, Sends Warning

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has warned party officials against using slogans linked to President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign during ODM events.

Speaking in Mombasa during a meeting with party delegates on Friday, Sifuna said some officials had started chanting “two terms” while campaigning for ODM candidates in the upcoming by-elections, a move he said sends the wrong political message.

According to Sifuna, the ongoing campaigns are only for Members of Parliament and County Assembly seats, not for the presidency.

He reminded party officials that ODM has not yet decided how it will approach the 2027 general election.

“These by-elections are not presidential elections. So I want to tell our people not to bring up ‘two-term’ chants in ODM rallies,” Sifuna said.

He added that such slogans could create confusion within the party and mislead supporters into thinking ODM had already endorsed President Ruto for a second term.

The Nairobi Senator also dismissed reports claiming that ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) had entered into a pre-election deal ahead of the by-elections.

He clarified that what exists between the two parties is a “broad-based cooperation,” not a coalition.

“The broad-based arrangement is not a political party. It has no candidates of its own,” Sifuna explained.

“ODM is going into these mini-polls independently, with its symbol and its candidates.”

Sifuna’s remarks come amid ongoing speculation that ODM leader Raila Odinga’s close ties with President Ruto could influence the party’s political direction ahead of 2027.

However, Sifuna maintained that any decisions on future alliances will be made by the top leadership, not individuals acting on their own.

“We agreed as the Central Committee that the decision on 2027 belongs to the party’s top leadership. Those who want to bring confusion should wait until the official position is announced,” he said.
