Robert Alai Reacts After Funeral Event Was Destructed Over Prof. Tom Ojienda's Entry in Nyikal

Kisumu, Kenya — Tension gripped Ridore village in Seme sub-county after a burial ceremony turned chaotic, prompting reactions from political leaders including Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai.

The incident occurred during the funeral of Mzee Eliud Nyikal Okaka, father to Seme MP James Nyikal. What was expected to be a solemn send-off quickly descended into disorder following the arrival of Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda.

Eyewitnesses and videos shared online showed groups of youths engaging in heated confrontations, with claims emerging that supporters linked to Tom Ojienda clashed with locals and rival political factions.

The situation reportedly escalated to the point where the ceremony was temporarily disrupted.

Addressing mourners, James Nyikal expressed frustration over the incident, accusing the senator of arriving with rowdy youths who allegedly caused chaos and nearly harmed his son. He called for calm and respect, noting that funerals should remain peaceful and dignified.

The burial also exposed underlying political tensions within the region, with reports indicating that allies of Siaya Governor James Orengo were among those targeted during the confrontation.

Chants of rival slogans, including “Wantam” and “Tutam,” filled the air as factions clashed for dominance.

Religious leaders, led by Bishop Rt. Rev. Charles Ong’injo, intervened to restore order and urged politicians to avoid turning funerals into political battlegrounds.

In the aftermath, Robert Alai took to social media to defend Tom Ojienda, arguing that the senator should not be blamed for the actions of enthusiastic youth supporters.

According to Alai, the large presence of politically active young people in the region is a reflection of long-standing socio-economic realities.

“After 60 years in the opposition, it is only obvious that we have many young people whose families have survived through politics,” he stated, suggesting that such dynamics naturally draw youths toward influential leaders.

Alai further described Tom Ojienda as generous and supportive to young people, which he said explains their loyalty. He cautioned against misinterpreting the situation as deliberate disruption.

Political analyst Jackton Madialo also weighed in, noting that in Luo Nyanza, funerals often double as political stages where leaders gauge influence through crowd reactions and attendance.

The incident has reignited debate over the growing trend of political rivalry spilling into social functions.

Leaders and residents alike are now calling for restraint, emphasizing the need to respect boundaries and preserve the dignity of communal events such as funerals.
