"Akwende na Huko, Wakwende kabisa, Sisi hatubembelezi mtu," Gachagu Responds to Claims that Martha Karua Dumped United Opposition; Says This

Kajiado, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims that Martha Karua has abandoned the United Opposition, stating that any leader uncomfortable with the coalition is free to chart their own political path ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a public baraza at Elangata Enkima in Kajiado South Constituency, Rigathi Gachagua addressed the growing speculation surrounding divisions within the opposition camp.

In a blunt and unapologetic tone, he told off those allegedly complaining about being sidelined in coalition arrangements.

“Nasikia kuna wengine tulikuwa nao wakatoka eti tumekataa kuwapatia nafasi. Wakwende kabisa, waende kabisa. Sisi hatubembelezi mtu,” he said, drawing cheers from sections of the crowd.

His remarks come amid reports suggesting that Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), may have exited the United Opposition to pursue her own presidential ambitions.

However, Rigathi Gachagua did not directly confirm her departure but made it clear that the coalition would not beg anyone to stay.

The former DP emphasized that the opposition’s main goal is to field a strong and winnable presidential candidate capable of unseating President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 polls.

He stressed that popularity and grassroots support—not seniority or political history—will determine who carries the coalition’s flag.

“Tutakaa chini ili tuelewane ni nani atamenyana na Ruto. Hatutachagua mtu kwa sababu alikuwa kwa siasa. Tunataka mtu anaweza kushinda Ruto,” he added.

The unfolding developments highlight rising tensions within the opposition as leaders position themselves for the high-stakes contest.

Analysts say the question of unity could make or break the coalition’s chances against the incumbent.

While some supporters have backed Rigathi Gachagua’s tough stance, arguing that discipline is necessary, others warn that internal wrangles could weaken the opposition and hand an advantage to William Ruto.
