ODM and UDA Mandate Ruto, Oburu to Lead Coalition Talks Ahead of 2027 Race

Fresh details have emerged regarding behind-the-scenes coalition discussions between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as political preparations for the 2027 General Election continue to intensify.

According to reports, President William Ruto and Oburu Odinga have reportedly been tasked by their respective parties to spearhead anticipated coalition negotiations expected to shape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next presidential contest.

The discussions are believed to be part of broader efforts aimed at exploring a possible working arrangement that could strengthen President Ruto’s reelection bid in 2027.

However, despite receiving backing from their political camps, the two sides are yet to formally begin coalition negotiations, with reports indicating that major disagreements remain unresolved.

Sources familiar with the matter claim one of the biggest sticking points revolves around the Deputy President position in any potential coalition arrangement.

Reports indicate that ODM leaders are allegedly pushing for guarantees that the party would secure the country’s second-highest political office in exchange for supporting Ruto’s reelection campaign.

The issue is said to have complicated early discussions, especially because UDA is reportedly keen to avoid creating political uncertainty around Kithure Kindiki, who assumed the deputy presidency following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua in 2024.

Political analysts say the emerging negotiations reflect growing political realignments as parties position themselves ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 elections.

Observers also note that ODM faces internal pressure over whether to maintain its opposition identity or pursue a broader coalition strategy that could place some of its leaders within government structures.

At the same time, UDA leaders are said to be carefully balancing coalition interests with the need to preserve support within Kenya Kwanza strongholds, particularly in the Mt Kenya region where succession politics remain sensitive.

The talks come amid increasing speculation over future alliances involving ODM figures, UDA officials, and other regional political movements seeking influence ahead of 2027.

While neither side has officially confirmed details of the negotiations, the reports have already triggered debate among supporters and political observers over the possible shape of future alliances.

Analysts believe the outcome of any ODM-UDA discussions could significantly influence the country’s political direction, especially as competition for key positions within any coalition arrangement continues to intensify.
