A second-term lawmaker from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is reportedly reconsidering plans to defect to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) after facing resistance from supporters and grassroots leaders.
According to reports, the unnamed MP had initially shown interest in joining President William Ruto’s party as political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election continue to intensify.
However, fresh developments suggest the legislator may now be slowing down the planned move following mounting pressure from ODM supporters who reportedly warned against abandoning the opposition party.
The situation reflects growing tensions within opposition ranks as several leaders from Western Kenya and other regions continue to be linked to possible defections toward the ruling coalition.
Political analysts say many lawmakers are increasingly finding themselves caught between aligning with the national government for political survival and maintaining loyalty to their traditional support bases.
Sources indicate that some ODM supporters have expressed concern over what they describe as increasing closeness between certain opposition lawmakers and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Grassroots mobilizers are said to have warned leaders that defecting to UDA could weaken ODM’s influence in regions where the party has historically enjoyed strong support.
The debate intensified recently after Titus Khamala officially defected from ODM to UDA during a meeting held at his Shibuli home in Kakamega County.
During the event, Khamala publicly declared his support for President Ruto’s reelection bid in 2027, a move that sparked mixed political reactions in Western Kenya.
ODM leaders have since accused UDA of aggressively targeting the party’s grassroots networks and attempting to lure opposition lawmakers into supporting the ruling coalition.
Party officials also questioned why some ODM members were participating in UDA-related political activities despite there being no formal coalition agreement between the two parties.
Observers say the reported hesitation by the unnamed MP highlights the political uncertainty currently facing many opposition leaders as they weigh personal political calculations against pressure from supporters.
The situation also demonstrates the growing importance of grassroots opinion ahead of the 2027 elections, where local political loyalty and voter sentiment are expected to play a major role in shaping alliances and party strength across the country.
As realignments continue, both ODM and UDA are expected to intensify efforts to strengthen their influence in strategic regions viewed as critical to future national political contests.
