A family in Kibera, Nairobi, is in deep mourning following the sudden and suspicious death of 54-year-old Zaituni Kavaya, who had worked as a domestic worker for a Sudanese family in Kilimani.
Her daughter, Faith Kavaya, is now calling for justice as unanswered questions surround her mother’s final moments.
Faith recalled that her mother had already completed her duties for the day when she received a phone call from her employer, asking her to return to work.
Zaituni obeyed, unaware that she would never return home alive. Later that evening, Faith attempted to reach her on the phone to bring her tea, but her calls went unanswered.
Soon after, she received a distressing call from Kilimani Police Station, asking her to report there urgently.
It was at the station that the devastating news was delivered — her mother had died.
Shaken and in tears, Faith rushed to City Mortuary, where she was confronted with the heartbreaking sight of her mother’s body.
According to the Sudanese family’s lawyer, the incident occurred after the employer’s child alleged that money had gone missing from trousers Zaituni had washed.
The lawyer claimed that after threats of reporting her to the police, she attempted to flee and fell from a balcony.
However, Zaituni’s family disputes this version of events. Faith revealed that when police handed over her mother’s belongings, all they found was KSh 160, slippers, a dera, and rubber shoes — nothing to suggest theft.
A post-mortem later revealed that Zaituni’s death was caused by multiple internal injuries inflicted by a blunt object, not a fall, fueling suspicion that foul play was involved.
“My mother left home healthy and alive. We just want the truth. She was our everything, and we will not rest until justice is done,” Faith said in a trembling voice.
Zaituni’s sister, Amina Mwanisa, expressed her anger, accusing foreigners of committing crimes in Kenya without facing consequences.
She called on the authorities to act swiftly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Police have since arrested five Sudanese nationals linked to the case, who are being held at Kilimani Police Station as investigations continue.
