According to reports that inspired this story, Sam had been sent by his mother to buy unga at a nearby shop on Wednesday.
However, the cheerful boy never made it back home. Hours later, his lifeless body was discovered in a maize plantation near their home.
Family members and neighbours say that the suspected killer had been pursuing Sam’s mother romantically, but she had turned down his advances.
“The man had been disturbing her for some time. When she refused his advances, he decided to harm the innocent child,” said a close family friend.
The heartbreaking discovery sparked anger and grief in the community. Villagers joined in a massive overnight search when Sam failed to return home, only to find his body dumped in the field.
Later in the evening, the suspect reportedly surrendered himself to the police.
Social media users have since poured out messages of sympathy and outrage, calling for justice for the slain boy.
Many condemned the suspect’s act, describing it as pure evil and inhuman.
“How can a grown man do such a thing to an innocent child because of rejection? May God protect our children,” wrote one user.
“Single mothers go through so much pain. May God comfort Sam’s mother and give her strength,” another added.
Friends who knew Sam’s family described him as a bright and cheerful boy who often helped his mother at their small market stall.
“It’s heartbreaking. He was such a sweet child,” one neighbour said.
The incident has also reignited public concern over rising cases of gender-based violence and revenge killings in local communities.
Residents are urging authorities to ensure the suspect faces the full force of the law.
This tragedy comes just days after another heartbreaking case in Kericho, where a Grade 9 girl, Cynthia Chepkirui, was found murdered on her way to school.
Kenyans online have been calling for stronger child protection measures and community awareness to prevent such brutal acts.
