Mammoth Ol Kalou Mourners Burst Into Wantam Chants Infront Of Ruto After Gachagua Is Called To Speak But Wetangula Steps Up

Tension and political excitement briefly filled the air during the memorial service of the late Ol Kalou Member of Parliament Njuguna Kiaraho in Nyandarua County on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as supporters chanted “Wantam” when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was invited to address mourners.

The chants, which have become associated with Gachagua’s political messaging and his allies’ push for a one-term presidency, broke out shortly after he was called to speak during the emotionally charged event.

Earlier in the proceedings, Kinangop MP Zachary Kwenya Thuku delivered a speech that appeared to contain indirect political remarks aimed at Gachagua.

While his message was largely supportive of national leadership, observers noted that parts of his speech carried undertones of political positioning ahead of future elections.

“Wantam” Chants Erupt as Rigathi Gachagua Is Invited to Speak Before Moses Wetang’ula at Nyandarua Memorial

Following his remarks, the MP invited Gachagua to address the gathering. However, what followed was a brief moment of confusion as the event’s speaking order appeared to shift, causing a slight disruption in the program.

After the interruption, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula took the podium to continue managing the proceedings.

He proceeded to recognize various Members of Parliament present at the event and coordinate their participation.

The atmosphere became livelier when a group of legislators performed a song, which was met with loud chants of “Wantam” from sections of the crowd.

The slogan, widely linked to Gachagua’s political base, is often used to express opposition to President William Ruto serving more than one term.

The chants underscored the growing political undertones surrounding the memorial service, which was intended to honour the late MP but also became a platform where political alliances and sentiments were subtly displayed.

Despite the interruptions and the brief confusion in the program, the event continued with leaders paying tribute to the late Kiaraho.

The presence of top national figures, including senior politicians and parliamentary leaders, highlighted the significance of the occasion.

Gachagua’s invitation to speak, followed by the crowd reactions, reflected his continued influence in parts of the Mt Kenya region, where political dynamics are increasingly shaping public gatherings.

The event also demonstrated the delicate balance between mourning and politics, as leaders navigated both respect for the deceased and expressions of political identity.

As the memorial service proceeded, speakers and attendees remained focused on honouring the legacy of the late MP, even as the underlying political signals continued to draw attention.
