COTU Boss Francis Atwoli Slams Edwin Sifuna Over Nairobi Political Ambitions

COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has criticised Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna, saying contributions from market vendors and small traders will not be enough to win an election.

Atwoli made the remarks in what appeared to be a sharp attack on Sifuna's political strategy and growing influence in Nairobi.

"Contributions from market vendors and small traders won't get you elected," Atwoli said, sparking fresh debate about the political contest for leadership in the capital.

The comments come as political leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. Nairobi is expected to be one of the country's most competitive political battlegrounds, with several leaders seeking to build strong support among different groups.

Sifuna has remained a vocal figure in Kenyan politics and has built a strong following, particularly among young people and Nairobi residents. His involvement with the Linda Mwananchi movement has also attracted attention as political alliances continue to change.

However, Atwoli's remarks suggest that he believes winning a major political contest requires more than support from small-scale traders and informal business groups.

The statement has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans, especially on social media. Some agreed with Atwoli, arguing that successful political campaigns require broad support across different sections of society.

Others defended Sifuna, saying market vendors, small traders, and ordinary citizens are an important part of Nairobi's voting population and should not be dismissed.

Political observers say the exchange highlights the growing competition among leaders as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections. Politicians are increasingly engaging with different groups as they seek to strengthen their support bases.
