Nyandarua: Tense Moment as William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua Share Platform After Fallout

A tense political moment was witnessed in Nyandarua County after President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appeared at the same event for the first time since their widely publicised fallout.

The two leaders attended the requiem mass of the late Ol Kalou Member of Parliament, David Kiaraho, held at Nyandarua University grounds on Wednesday, April 8.

The event brought together several high-ranking government officials and political leaders, making it both a moment of mourning and a display of the country’s current political atmosphere.

Despite sharing the same venue, all eyes were on the interaction between Ruto and Gachagua. Observers noted a cold atmosphere as the president greeted several leaders upon arrival but appeared to skip greeting his former deputy. This move did not go unnoticed by the crowd, many of whom were keenly watching the two.

Gachagua, who arrived later, received cheers from sections of the crowd. He took his seat next to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano and Nyandarua Senator John Methu, maintaining a calm but reserved presence throughout the event.

The tension between the two leaders has been building in recent weeks, especially after Gachagua, now linked to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), declared he would attend the service. His presence was seen by some as politically significant, given his recent criticism of the government.

In another dramatic moment, members of Gachagua’s media team were reportedly removed from the VVIP section by presidential security officers as they attempted to capture better footage. This incident further highlighted the strained relations between the camps.

During her speech, Kiaraho’s widow acknowledged several leaders present, including President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. However, she did not mention Gachagua, a move that raised eyebrows among attendees.

According to the official programme, Gachagua was not scheduled to speak at the event. However, it remains unclear whether he would be given a chance, as he had earlier indicated his intention to address the gathering.

The meeting of the two leaders under such tense circumstances signals ongoing political divisions that could shape the country’s future.
