Edwin Sifuna Pulls 10 MPs From ODM as the Linda Mwananchi Faction Gains Ground

A growing political faction within the Orange Democratic Movement is beginning to reshape internal dynamics after a high-profile meeting in Nairobi brought together several Members of Parliament under the leadership of the party’s Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.

The meeting, organized by the Linda Mwananchi caucus, was held on March 11 in Nairobi and attracted nearly ten lawmakers from different parts of the country.

Political observers see the gathering as a strong signal that the faction is consolidating influence within ODM as the party gradually begins positioning itself for the 2027 Kenyan General Election.

The Linda Mwananchi group has recently emerged as one of the more vocal voices within the party, frequently addressing governance issues, electoral reforms and the direction of the opposition.

Several prominent legislators attended the meeting, reflecting the faction’s growing reach across multiple regions.

Among them were Babu Owino, Caroli Omondi, Wilberforce Oundo, Anthony Kibagendi, Obadiah Barongo and Clive Gisairo.

The diversity of leaders present—from Nairobi, Nyanza and Western Kenya—demonstrated that the caucus is gradually building a broader political network within the party’s parliamentary wing.

The meeting also drew support from senior ODM leaders, including James Orengo and Geoffrey Osotsi.

Their presence elevated the event from an ordinary caucus gathering into what many analysts now consider a strategic political forum.

During the discussions, the Linda Mwananchi caucus presented a detailed review of the Ten-Point Agenda that emerged from the Broad-Based Government (BBG) arrangement following the contested 2022 political environment.

Members of the caucus expressed dissatisfaction with the progress made by the committee tasked with implementing the agenda.

According to their assessment, the reforms that were expected to address governance and electoral concerns have moved very slowly.

Some leaders argued that the implementation score of the agenda would barely reach “one out of ten,” suggesting that the process has largely failed to deliver meaningful results.

The caucus also raised concerns about electoral reforms. Leaders questioned why there has been no comprehensive audit of the 2022 Kenyan General Election, which many opposition supporters believe is necessary to restore public confidence in the electoral system.

Another major issue raised during the meeting was the process of reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Members of the caucus warned that if the process becomes politically influenced, it could undermine the credibility of future elections.

Beyond electoral matters, the leaders also criticized the government’s claims of inclusivity. They argued that despite promises of national unity, concerns about ethnic and gender representation remain unresolved in many public institutions.

As the political landscape begins to shift ahead of 2027, the emergence of the Linda Mwananchi caucus highlights the growing internal debates within ODM about strategy, reforms and the party’s future direction.

With influential figures now openly aligning with the faction, analysts say the group could play a key role in shaping the opposition’s agenda in the coming years.
