Fresh Details Emerge On Two Tough Conditions Hussein Marjan Allegedly Made to IEBC Chairperson in the Final Hours of His Axing

Fresh details have emerged about the circumstances surrounding the exit of Hussein Marjan from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), with reports indicating that his departure may not have been as smooth as initially presented to the public.

Earlier statements released by both the IEBC chairperson and Marjan suggested that he had left the position following consultations and mutual agreement.

However, multiple sources familiar with the matter now claim that the situation was more complicated, and that pressure had been mounting within the commission and from political circles before his exit.

According to insiders, Marjan is said to have realized that his removal from the position of chief executive officer was imminent.

This reportedly prompted him to seek a negotiated exit in order to safeguard his professional reputation and secure his contractual benefits. Lawyers representing both sides are said to have been involved in the discussions that followed.

One of the key issues Marjan allegedly raised was the wording of his exit letter. Sources indicate that he insisted the letter should clearly state that his departure was by “mutual consent.”

Observers say such wording is often important for senior public officials, as it helps protect their public image and future career prospects, especially in sensitive institutions like the electoral commission.

Reports further claim that Marjan made two additional demands after receiving confirmation about the wording of the letter.

The first was that he be paid his full salary and benefits for the remainder of his contract, which was scheduled to run until March 9, 2027.

At the time of his reported dismissal, more than a year remained on his five-year contract, which began in March 2022.

The second demand was compensation for accumulated leave days that he had not taken during his tenure at the commission. Sources say these requests were formally communicated to the IEBC leadership through his legal representatives.

Marjan’s counter-proposal is said to have triggered urgent consultations within the commission. Some commissioners were reportedly recalled from official engagements to deliberate on the matter and determine the next course of action.

These discussions are believed to have influenced the final decision to terminate his contract.

It remains unclear whether the commission agreed to all the conditions that were reportedly presented.

IEBC officials have not publicly disclosed details of any settlement, and the matter continues to attract attention given the commission’s critical role in preparing for the 2027 General Election.
