In a statement released after the meeting, the NEC said it had raised concerns about discipline and conduct within the party’s top leadership.
The announcement came as a surprise to many political observers, as Sifuna has been one of ODM’s most visible and vocal leaders in recent years.
As Secretary General, he frequently spoke on behalf of the party and played a key role in defending its policies and positions in public debates.
Following his removal, Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omayo has assumed the role of Secretary General.
Omayo previously served as the party’s deputy Secretary General and is expected to steer the party’s administrative and communication functions as ODM prepares for future political activities and internal reorganizations.
There had been early indications that changes could be coming within the party’s leadership. Reports indicated that Sifuna was absent from the NEC meeting where the decision was made, along with Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi.
Their absence fueled speculation about internal disagreements and possible restructuring within the party.
Political analysts say the move could signal deeper efforts by ODM to strengthen party discipline and unity as the country gradually moves toward the next election cycle.
Parties often review their internal structures during such periods to align leadership with their strategic direction.
However, the decision may also spark debate among ODM supporters and the wider political community, given Sifuna’s popularity and his strong presence in national politics.
