Embakasi East Woman Sentenced to Seven Years for Attempted Murder

A Kibera court has sentenced a woman from Embakasi East to seven years in prison after finding her guilty of attempting to kill her boyfriend during a domestic dispute.

The accused, identified as Ebby Khalea, was charged with attacking Michael Ngure Wanjeri, a man she had reportedly been in a relationship with for about one month. The incident occurred on July 31, 2023, at Kisumu Ndogo in the Soweto area.

According to court proceedings, the victim was inside his rented room on the night of the incident when Khalea returned from a nearby drinking joint and found the door locked from the inside.

The prosecution told the court that the suspect sought help from a local resident to open the door after she was unable to gain entry.

Investigators said she managed to get into the house, and shortly afterward, a heated argument broke out between the two. Neighbours later told the court that they heard raised voices coming from the room late at night.

Moments later, the victim raised an alarm, attracting the attention of residents. When neighbours responded, they found him injured and immediately arranged for transport to hospital using a motorcycle.

Ngure was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he received emergency treatment. Medical reports presented in court confirmed that he had sustained serious injuries that required urgent care but later recovered after several days of treatment.

During the trial, the prosecution presented witness testimony and medical evidence to support the charge. The court heard that the weapon believed to have been used in the attack was recovered at the scene.

In delivering judgment, the magistrate ruled that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found Khalea guilty of attempted murder and sentenced her to serve seven years in prison.

The ruling brought to an end a case that had been in court for several years, with both the victim and witnesses giving testimony about what happened that night.

Legal experts note that attempted murder carries heavy penalties under Kenyan law, reflecting the seriousness of violent offences and the need to deter similar acts.

The case has also renewed discussions among community leaders about the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully and seeking help when disputes escalate, particularly in domestic relationships.

Police have urged members of the public to report threats or violence early, saying timely intervention can prevent situations from turning tragic.
