The death of Caroline Chepkoech, aged 33, has left her family, colleagues, and the education community in deep mourning.
Caroline was found dead inside her rented house at Longisa Trading Centre in Bomet East Constituency.
Initial reports indicated that she had allegedly fallen while taking a shower in her bathroom.
The information was first shared with her family by people close to her, who claimed the incident was an accident. However, later developments raised serious questions about what really happened.
According to police officers who visited the scene, Caroline had been living with her boyfriend, Antony Kariuki Njenga, also aged 33.
Njenga told police that Caroline slipped in the bathroom and sustained fatal injuries. However, officers noted inconsistencies in his account, prompting them to launch further investigations.
Caroline’s body was taken to Longisa Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary, where a postmortem examination was conducted.
The autopsy revealed disturbing findings that contradicted the initial claim of an accidental fall.
Doctors reported that Caroline had severe spinal and cervical fractures, injuries that medical experts said could not have been caused by a simple slip in the bathroom.
The postmortem further revealed that Caroline was about one month pregnant at the time of her death.
Following the medical findings, police arrested Njenga as the prime suspect in the case. He was taken into custody at Longisa Police Station and later arraigned in court.
The court ordered that he be detained for seven days to allow police to complete investigations into the suspected murder.
Tragically, just a few hours after being placed in custody, Njenga was found dead inside his police cell.
According to the Sub-County Police Commander, a police officer conducting a routine check at around 3:45 pm discovered that Njenga had taken his own life by hanging himself using his socks inside the cell toilet.
Njenga’s body was also transferred to Longisa Referral Hospital Mortuary, the same facility where Caroline’s body was being preserved ahead of burial.
