Sifuna Might Not Get 100% of Luhya Votes in 2027 – Khalwale

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is not expected to secure 100 per cent of the Luhya vote if he pursues his presidential ambitions in the 2027 General Election.

In an interview with The Star, Khalwale said although Sifuna would begin his presidential campaign with significant support from the Luhya community, he would not receive the backing of every voter in the region.

The Kakamega senator explained that no community in Kenya has voted entirely for one candidate, with voters often making different political choices during elections.

He cited the 2002 presidential election, when Mwai Kibaki won the presidency with support from a broad coalition but did not receive every vote from the Kikuyu community.

The senator also referred to the 2022 election, when the late Raila Odinga received backing from various political forces but did not secure all Luhya votes.

According to Khalwale, Sifuna's failure to receive support from every Luhya voter would not mean the community had rejected his presidential bid.

“When Sifuna has the momentum that he is running for president, we expect him to start with a block of Luhya votes. But it can never be 100 per cent,” the self-proclaimed bullfighter said.

He noted that even if five, 10 or 20 per cent of Luhya voters chose other candidates, that would simply reflect the democratic choices made by individual voters.

Khalwale also backed Sifuna's presidential ambitions as the Nairobi senator continues to gain momentum, with the Linda Mwananchi movement principals endorsing him as its presidential candidate at a meeting held over the weekend.
