Peter Kaluma Endorses Kalonzo For Presidency, Urges Edwin Sifuna To Be His Deputy Ahead of 2027

Peter Kaluma has offered a blunt assessment of Edwin Sifuna’s political future, arguing that the Nairobi Senator should respect Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and consider becoming his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

According to Kaluma, Sifuna should avoid rushing to position himself at the centre of the opposition contest. Instead, he believes the senator should recognise Kalonzo’s experience and accept a supporting role in a coalition that could challenge President William Ruto.

The remarks highlight the difficult choices facing opposition politicians as the 2027 elections approach. With several leaders positioning themselves for influence, questions about who should lead and who should support remain unresolved.

Sifuna has established himself as one of the more outspoken voices in Kenya’s political arena. His communication skills, energetic public presence and growing national profile have made him an important figure within the opposition space.

However, political popularity does not automatically translate into a presidential victory. Kenya’s elections are heavily influenced by coalition building, regional support, party structures, financial resources and the ability to bring different voting blocs together.

Kaluma’s argument therefore raises an important strategic question: should Sifuna pursue his own presidential ambitions or strengthen a broader coalition by accepting the running-mate position?

Kalonzo, meanwhile, has decades of political experience and has previously served as Vice President. Supporters of his candidature could argue that his experience gives him an advantage in negotiating a broad opposition alliance.

Yet, the claim that Sifuna would “disappear” from politics after losing an election remains debatable. Kenyan politics has repeatedly demonstrated that political careers can survive electoral defeats, sometimes becoming even stronger afterward.

For Sifuna, the bigger challenge may not simply be choosing between leading and supporting. He must determine where his political influence can have the greatest impact while protecting his long-term ambitions.

The opposition also faces a wider challenge. Personal ambitions must eventually be balanced against the need for a coherent national strategy if the objective is to defeat an incumbent president.

Kaluma’s remarks may therefore be interpreted as both advice and a warning. Whether Sifuna accepts such counsel will depend on how he calculates his political future.

What do you think? Should Sifuna support Kalonzo as his running mate, or should he pursue his own presidential ambitions in 2027? Comment and share your ideas.
