Sifuna Reveals His Next Move If the Opposition Denies Him the 2027 Flagbearer Ticket

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has dismissed suggestions that he could accept the position of deputy presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, signalling that he intends to pursue his political ambitions from a different position.

Sifuna reportedly said anyone expecting him to settle for a subordinate role was “dreaming,” adding that he would rather remain in his current position than serve as a deputy.

His comments come as opposition leaders continue discussions about how to structure a coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential contest. The question of who should lead the opposition ticket and how other senior positions would be distributed has become an important part of the negotiations.

Sifuna has emerged as a prominent figure within the opposition through his Linda Mwananchi movement. His political activities have generated discussions about whether he could seek the presidency and how his ambitions might fit into a broader coalition.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has previously said he would be open to becoming Sifuna’s running mate if the opposition eventually settled on the Nairobi senator as its presidential candidate.

The possibility of different opposition leaders taking various positions has continued to fuel negotiations. Some political figures have advocated for mechanisms such as opinion surveys to help determine the coalition’s presidential candidate, although the final arrangements would depend on discussions among the participating parties and leaders.

Sifuna’s latest remarks therefore add another dimension to the debate over leadership roles within the opposition. His stated preference indicates that he does not currently intend to pursue the deputy position, while other leaders continue to consider possible combinations for the 2027 contest.

The Nairobi senator was previously removed as ODM Secretary-General following an internal disciplinary process, with the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal later upholding the party’s second removal process. The dispute had been linked partly to his political activities, including the Linda Mwananchi initiative.

As opposition negotiations continue, Sifuna’s position, together with the ambitions of other political principals, will form part of the broader discussions over the coalition’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 General Election.
