Justin Muturi Pokes Holes in Bursary Scheme in Kenya, How it Humiliates

Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has once again slammed Kenya's bursary system, calling it a humiliating handout that strips dignity from parents and children.

In a fresh video posted on X on January 22, 2026, Muturi described how families are forced into long queues, made to sing or perform, and left waiting at the mercy of politicians just to secure school fees.

"The bursary system has reduced education to a handout," he said. "Parents and children are forced to queue, sing and wait before leaders, just to access education. Education should be free, accessible, and guaranteed for every child."

Muturi, now leading the Democratic Party, has consistently pushed to scrap the fragmented bursary setup—where funds flow separately through MPs, governors, MCAs, and other offices.

He wants all resources pooled into one transparent national education fund to deliver truly free, universal schooling without political strings or favouritism.

His criticism echoes earlier statements, including an October 2025 rally call to abolish multiple bursary pots and end patronage.

Despite billions budgeted yearly, many needy students still miss out due to inefficiency, corruption claims, and selective distribution.

Muturi insists Kenya has the money—if used honestly—to make education a basic right, not a degrading favour.

His remarks have sparked fresh debate on overhauling education funding as the country heads toward more reforms.
