Fresh clarity has emerged surrounding the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament and former Cabinet Secretary Cyrus Jirongo following the release of postmortem findings by government pathologists.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has confirmed that Jirongo died from severe crush injuries to the chest sustained during a fatal road accident along the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway.
Detectives say the injuries resulted from blunt force trauma during a head-on collision involving his vehicle and a public service bus in Naivasha.
A postmortem examination conducted in Nairobi by government pathologist Johansen Oduor alongside family-appointed specialists established that the deceased suffered extensive chest injuries, including a perforated heart.
The injuries were described as catastrophic and immediately fatal.
Pathologists further reported multiple fractures across the body, including fractures on the right hand and both lower limbs.
The examination revealed multiple broken ribs, severe chest trauma, internal bleeding within the chest cavity and crush injuries extending into the abdominal region
Medical experts involved in the examination indicated that the nature and severity of the injuries meant survival was not possible given the impact involved in the crash.
Meanwhile, detectives continue to piece together Jirongo's final movements before the accident.
CCTV footage recovered from a petrol station near the crash scene shows his vehicle entering the station shortly before the collision, then exiting and turning back towards Nairobi moments before impact.
Investigators have also resumed questioning the bus driver involved in the crash and are recording statements from witnesses and individuals who interacted with Jirongo earlier that night, including those he met in Nairobi.
