He Followed His Friend: Veteran Radio Presenter Festus Amimo Dies Hours After Mourning Friend

Veteran radio presenter Festus Amimo, Head of Radio at Mayienga FM under Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), has died unexpectedly, the station confirmed on Sunday, December 7.

Amimo, a respected broadcaster known for his authoritative voice and engaging style, passed away just hours after posting a tribute to a late friend on social media.

On Friday, December 5, he had shared a message mourning Rose Yier, writing, “We have this evening lost a friend. RIP.”

Mayienga FM described his death as shocking, mourning the loss of a dedicated professional whose passion for radio and commitment to the craft were unmatched.

“It is with profound shock, deep sorrow, and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our head of station, Festus Amimo,” the station said in a statement.

Amimo hosted the popular morning show “Gari Mokinyi” on Mayienga FM, where he earned widespread admiration for his ability to connect with listeners and discuss issues affecting communities across the country.

His work extended beyond radio, as he served as Chair of the Luo Journalists Association, mentoring young journalists and shaping media standards in the region.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo expressed his shock and sorrow, describing Amimo as “a warm soul, a steady presence, and a true friend whose kindness and humility touched everyone around him.”

Colleagues from other radio stations, including Radio Namlolwe, also paid tribute, offering condolences to his family, friends, and listeners.

Photos and footage from the KBC studios in Nairobi show Amimo in action, conducting interviews with public figures, including political leaders and community representatives.

His sudden passing has left a void in the broadcasting community, particularly among those who admired his professional dedication and mentorship.

The cause of Amimo’s death has not yet been disclosed by the station. Tributes continue to pour in on social media, with colleagues, listeners, and public officials expressing their grief and celebrating his contributions to Kenyan radio.

His legacy will continue through the many journalists he mentored and the countless listeners whose mornings he enriched with his voice, insight, and professionalism.

The nation joins Mayienga FM and KBC in mourning the loss of a broadcasting icon whose dedication and passion left a lasting mark on Kenyan radio.
