Governor Forced to Clarify Calls to Rename Stadium William Ruto

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has issued a clarification following public uproar over his recent remarks suggesting that the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet could be renamed William Ruto Stadium.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, December 9, Sang explained that the original stadium — which sits on an eight-acre parcel within the Kapsabet Showground — is being relocated to a larger piece of land to allow for expansion into a modern multi-sport facility.

The governor emphasised that the upgraded and relocated facility would retain the name Kipchoge Keino Stadium, honouring the legendary Olympic champion’s legacy.

“The new Kipchoge Keino Stadium will celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Kipchoge Keino and reinforce our identity as the home of world-class athletes,” Sang stated.

He added that the project also reflects President William Ruto’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure across the country.

Governor Sang clarified that his earlier remarks were misunderstood. His intention was to differentiate the Kapsabet stadium from another Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

On December 8, Sang told residents that the existing Kapsabet facility might be renamed William Ruto Stadium to recognise the President’s contribution to Nandi County and to avoid duplication of stadium names.

“In Kenya we have Raila Odinga Stadium, Moi Stadium and others. There is no harm in naming ours after President Ruto,” he said during the inauguration of new Kapsabet Municipality offices.

Sang assured the public that both stadiums — the one in Nandi and the original iconic venue in Uasin Gishu — will retain their unique identities. Consultations with stakeholders are ongoing to preserve the historical value of each site.
