Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has sharply criticised Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou for approving the registration of Mike Sonko’s new political party, arguing that the move violates Kenya’s leadership and integrity standards.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 10, the senator claimed the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) acted illegally when it authorised Sonko to form the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), whose certificate was issued just a day earlier.
According to Cherargei, the Constitution’s provision for political freedoms does not extend to individuals who have been impeached. He insisted that Sonko, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu are barred from:
Forming a political party
Running a political party
Holding party leadership positions
He accused the registrar of violating the Leadership and Integrity Chapter, saying the approval amounted to “a puzzle, illegal, unconstitutional, and corruption of the highest order.”
Waititu currently leads the Farmers Party, having taken over in February 2025, while Gachagua has been associated with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), launched in May 2025.
Sonko’s NEDP is fully registered and permitted to field candidates in any by-election across the country, according to ORPP.
The former Nairobi governor is expected to be formally installed as party leader in early 2026, signalling a renewed attempt to revive his political career ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sonko celebrated the approval online, affirming that the new party has met all requirements under the Political Parties Act.
