Prepare for Heavy Rainfall: Kenya Met Issues a Yellow Warning to Residents in These Regions

Kenyans are being urged to prepare for a wet Labour Day period as the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) continues to warn of ongoing heavy rainfall across several parts of the country.

According to the latest seasonal outlook and recent updates, much of the country is already experiencing enhanced rainfall linked to the March–May long rains season, which is typically the wettest period of the year.

The forecast indicates that regions such as the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, parts of the Rift Valley, and Nairobi are likely to receive near-average to above-average rainfall, with occasional intense downpours expected.

Meteorologists have cautioned that even areas not directly experiencing heavy rain could still face flash floods due to runoff from higher grounds.

Counties flagged as vulnerable include Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Meru, Nyeri, Mombasa, and surrounding regions where drainage systems may be overwhelmed during sudden storms.

The advisory comes at a time when parts of the country are still recovering from earlier episodes of flooding in March and April, which led to disruption of transport, displacement of families, and loss of lives in some areas.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that saturated soils and rising river levels could worsen the impact of any new heavy rainfall.

With Labour Day falling on May 1, families planning gatherings, travel, or outdoor events have been advised to closely monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.

Motorists are also being urged to avoid flooded roads, while residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to stay alert.

Kenya Met has emphasized that rainfall during this period is likely to be intermittent but sometimes intense, meaning short periods of heavy rain could cause significant local impacts.

As the holiday approaches, the overall message from forecasters remains clear: enjoy the break, but stay prepared for unpredictable weather conditions across many parts of the country.
