Mbeere North MP-elect Leonard Leo Muthende says he is ready to defend his victory in court if anyone challenges his win in the recent by-election.
A lawyer connected to the United Opposition had hinted that Muthende’s win might be contested over alleged electoral issues.
Speaking for the first time after being declared the winner, Muthende said he is fully prepared to argue his case and prove that he did nothing wrong.
According to him, his win came despite alleged goonism from his opponent’s side. He insisted that he followed all the electoral rules and promised to show evidence in court if needed.
"They want to go to court, my lawyer is very ready. In fact, I am the one who should go to court. I have evidence of them bringing violence during the By-election. There are no rules I violated. I am going to source all my evidence from the Media. I am the one with the right to go to Court," Muthende said.
Muthende also said that his main focus is on serving the people of Mbeere North. He will replace Geoffrey Ruku, who was nominated to the Cabinet earlier this year.
Muthende won with 15,802 votes, narrowly defeating Newton Karish of the DP, who had 15,308 votes.
The UDA party welcomed the victory, saying the voters chose the ballot box over intimidation and uncertainty. The party said the election shows that people want lasting development.
On the other hand, the side led by Rigathi Gachagua rejected the results, claiming the election was unfair.
They accused the state of deploying police and goons to disrupt voting. They also alleged that voters were bribed and that violence was used against their candidate.
Despite these accusations, President William Ruto congratulated Muthende and the victors.
He said the results are a good sign ahead of the 2027 elections, adding that the opposition has failed to present a convincing agenda to the people.
