The former Prime Minister late Raila Odinga ran for the presidential seat five times without success. He vied for the top seat in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022.
In all these scenarios, almost all regions in the country gave him majority of their votes at least once. However Mt Kenya region never gave Raila majority of their votes throughout his lifetime.
Mt Kenya was always against Raila's presidential bid whether they had a presidential candidate or not. In 1997, the first time Raila appeared on the presidential ballot, Mt Kenya had two presidential candidates, Kenneth Matiba and Mwai Kibaki. They divided their votes among the two.
In 2002, Raila endorsed and campaigned for Mwai Kibaki. They later fell out and took different paths after Kibaki won the election. In 2007, Raila ran against Kibaki. This time again, Mt Kenya chose Kibaki over Raila.
In 2013 and 2017, Raila and Uhuru Kenyatta were the main presidential contenders. Mt Kenya again stood with their son Uhuru Kenyatta.
In 2022, Raila ran for the presidential seat for the fifth time. This time he was against William Ruto. Ruto outsmarted Raila in Mt Kenya with a huge margin. Infact, Ruto only beat Raila in Mt Kenya, Kalenjin Rift, Bungoma, Isiolo and Marsabit counties. Raila won in the remaining parts of the country.
The Kalenjin Rift that didn't vote for Raila in 2013, 2017 and 2022 had voted for him in 2007. Coast, Nyanza, Western, Nairobi and Ukambani gave Raila majority of their votes in most general election except in 1997.
