Kenya’s political scene is witnessing renewed realignments as reports emerge of possible talks between President William Ruto’s camp and key opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa.
The move is seen as part of Ruto’s wider plan to broaden his government’s political base and weaken opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sources close to State House indicate that Ruto’s strategists are keen on roping in influential figures from the Azimio la Umoja coalition to consolidate national support.
After warming up to KANU chairman Gideon Moi, the president’s focus has reportedly shifted to the Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democratic Action Party boss Eugene Wamalwa — both viewed as pivotal in shaping the opposition’s 2027 strategy.
Political analysts say the possible inclusion of Kalonzo and Wamalwa would significantly alter the political balance. “If Ruto succeeds in bringing them on board, it would effectively dismantle the opposition’s structure and strengthen his re-election chances,” said governance expert Prof. Gitile Naituli on Tuesday.
However, both Kalonzo and Wamalwa have publicly dismissed claims of joining the government. Speaking during a church service in Machakos over the weekend, Kalonzo reaffirmed his commitment to Azimio’s vision, saying, “We are focused on offering Kenyans a credible alternative to Kenya Kwanza in 2027.”
Eugene Wamalwa echoed similar sentiments, warning against “political schemes meant to divide the opposition.”
Despite these denials, speculation continues to grow amid reports of behind-the-scenes engagements and shifting alliances. As President Ruto seeks to solidify his support across all regions, observers believe his divide-and-conquer approach could reshape the country’s political dynamics ahead of 2027 — especially if opposition unity falters.
The next few months are expected to reveal whether Ruto’s charm offensive will bear fruit or strengthen the opposition’s resolve.
