The nursing community and the entire nation are mourning the tragic death of Charity Chebet, a young nurse who died less than 24 hours after celebrating her graduation.
Chebet had just received her diploma in nursing and midwifery during a colourful ceremony at Mulago Hospital, which was attended by her proud parents.
Joy quickly turned into sorrow when she and her sibling lost their lives after a landslide swept through their home in Kapchorwa District, Uganda, early on Saturday, November 1.
Speaking to NTV Uganda, a family member shared that he had spoken to Chebet’s father shortly before the tragedy.
He said that they had gone to Mulago Hospital for the graduation of their daughter, and when he called them, they had already crossed Jinja at around 10 pm.
He added that at around 6 am the following morning, he received a call from one of the clan members informing him that there had been a disaster.
The horrific landslide left four people dead, including Chebet and her sibling, while her elderly parents miraculously survived and were rushed to hospital.
Videos shared online showed scenes from Chebet’s graduation, where she appeared cheerful and full of life, posing for selfies with her classmates.
Her fellow graduates and friends have flooded social media with emotional tributes, describing her as a bright and dedicated young nurse whose dreams were cut short too soon.
Chebet’s untimely death has left many heartbroken, turning what should have been the start of a promising career into a moment of national grief.
