Kenyans are once again talking about the future of ODM after Senator Oburu Oginga made new comments that left many people wondering what direction the party might take ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Garissa on Saturday, November 29, during the wedding of Noordin Haji’s son, Oburu praised the teamwork between ODM and President William Ruto’s UDA party in the recent by-elections.
He said the results showed that the two parties can achieve a lot when they work together.
In the mini polls, ODM and UDA won all the MP seats that were being contested.
Oburu said this success proved that the "broad-based government" arrangement has been working.
He reminded the public that ODM leader Raila Odinga had left the party inside the broad-based coalition before his death, and that ODM would continue working with Ruto until the end of the term in 2027.
However, what caught the attention of many Kenyans was Oburu’s hint that this partnership might continue even after 2027.
He suggested that recent political events show signs of a united side that could be very strong if it stays together.
Even so, ODM is not fully united on this matter. Some leaders want the party to support Ruto, while others believe ODM should run its own presidential candidate in 2027.
Before his death, Raila Odinga made it clear that ODM would remain in the government until 2027, but he refused to say whether the party would support Ruto’s re-election bid.
Will ODM stick with Ruto after 2027? Or will the party stand alone and try to reclaim its space? Kenyans will have to wait and see how things unfold.
