Malava By-Election: New Poll Shows UDA's David Ndakwa Trailing United Opposition Candidate

A new poll has shown UDA’s David Ndakwa trailing the united opposition candidate ahead of next week’s Malava parliamentary by-election.

In a survey conducted by Mizani Africa and released on Wednesday, November 19, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Seth Panyako emerged as the frontrunner in the closely contested race.

According to the poll, 47.2 percent of respondents said they would vote for Panyako, while 40.3 percent expressed support for former Kakamega County Assembly Minority Leader David Ndakwa.

More than 9 percent of those surveyed were undecided, while the remaining candidates collectively garnered 3.1 percent.

The Mizani Africa poll was carried out between November 13 and November 15, with a margin of error of 3 percent and a confidence level of 95 percent.

Panyako and Ndakwa are locked in an intense contest to succeed the late Malulu Injendi, whose death earlier this year left the Malava parliamentary seat vacant.

Panyako received a direct nomination from the Eugene Wamalwa-led opposition coalition, while Ndakwa secured the UDA ticket after defeating Malulu’s son, Ryan Injendi, in the party primaries.

Ndakwa is enjoying support from ODM and UDA leaders, with President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet leading efforts to consolidate backing for him.

Kakamega’s governor, his deputy, several ODM MPs, and a section of MCAs have also been campaigning on his behalf.

Panyako, on the other hand, is the joint candidate for the broader opposition. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale have been spearheading his campaign.

A victory for Panyako would be a setback for UDA, which has invested heavily in the by-election.

It would also dent the political influence of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, whom Natembeya has challenged in the contest for regional leadership.
