Senate proceedings on Wednesday turned intense after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna put Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi on the spot with a series of tough, no-nonsense questions.
The session, which attracted the attention of many Kenyans following the unfolding debates on public sector reforms, quickly became one of the day’s highlights.
Sifuna demanded clear answers on the government’s handling of key public service issues, including staffing shortages, delayed promotions, and concerns raised by civil servants over stalled reforms.
The senator insisted that Kenyans deserved transparency, emphasizing that the public service had become “too slow, too bureaucratic, and too disconnected” from the needs of ordinary citizens.
The heated exchange began when Sifuna asked the CS to provide detailed timelines for implementing the long-awaited human resource restructuring plan.
He questioned why several promises made earlier in the year remained unfulfilled, despite budget allocations already approved by Parliament.
CS Wandayi defended his ministry, explaining that some delays were caused by inter-agency coordination challenges, but assured the Senate that the government was committed to delivering on its pledges.
He urged lawmakers to allow the ministry more time to streamline processes that had been neglected for years.
However, Sifuna pressed further, challenging the CS to produce concrete progress reports instead of “general statements that do not help citizens understand what is changing.”
His firm tone and pointed questioning forced the CS to commit to presenting a comprehensive update before the next Senate appearance.
The dramatic session underscored growing pressure on government ministries to demonstrate accountability, with Kenyans increasingly demanding efficient public services and timely reforms.
