Winnie Odinga has called for a fresh and open conversation within the ODM party on how to handle the issue of the Broad-Based Government.
Speaking firmly but calmly, she reminded members that when this matter first came up, the entire ODM family placed their trust in one person—Raila Odinga, popularly known as Baba.
She said Baba was the one chosen to guide and manage the relationship on behalf of the party, and members believed in his wisdom and experience.
However, Winnie noted that times have changed, and the party now needs to reflect on the path ahead. According to her, it is important for ODM to return to its roots, the people.
She said ODM has always been a party built on consultation, debate, and listening to the wishes of its supporters.
For that reason, she believes the party must hold a National Delegates Conference (NDC) to allow members from across the country to share their views openly.
Winnie explained that the question is not just about whether ODM should support or reject the Broad-Based Government.
Instead, the bigger issue is who the party members want to entrust with managing that relationship going forward.
She stressed that such a decision cannot be made in small meetings or through public statements alone. It must come from the party’s democratic process.
In her message, Winnie said that returning to the people will help ODM maintain unity, clarity, and direction.
She added that by holding an NDC, members will get the chance to decide who they want to lead discussions with the Broad-Based Government, and what role the party should take in national matters.
According to Winnie, an NDC will also help silence unnecessary conflict and confusion within the party.
She believes that once the members speak, everyone will know the way forward, and leaders will be guided by the people’s voice.
