It was a normal afternoon for businesswoman Geraldine Chinyere until a phone call turned her world upside down.
Moments earlier, she had spoken with her best friend, Deborah Opah, not knowing it would be their last conversation.
According to eyewitnesses, Deborah was on her way home when tragedy struck.
A minibus hit her as she tried to cross the road, and before anyone could come to her rescue, another speeding vehicle ran over her. She died instantly.
Geraldine shared her heartbreak on Facebook, describing the painful moment she learned about the accident.
"She promised to send her sister to help me at my shop. We spoke again around 3:40 p.m. She sounded fine. Just hours later, she was gone,” she wrote.
Those who knew Deborah remember her as a cheerful woman full of life. Just two days before her death, she had visited Geraldine’s shop, laughing and making plans for an upcoming business anniversary.
“Your death is scary and mysterious. What a tragedy,” her friend wrote in tears.
The news of Deborah’s passing spread quickly on social media, where friends and relatives expressed their shock and sorrow.
Many described her death as one of the most painful losses they had ever experienced.
One user commented, “Sometimes life is so unfair. May her soul rest in peace.”
Another wrote, “I still can’t believe this happened. I saw her a few days ago smiling and full of energy.”
At Ogui Police Station, where Geraldine rushed after hearing the news, officers confirmed the accident had been reported and investigations were ongoing.
Witnesses say the drivers of both vehicles stopped briefly but fled after realizing how bad the situation was.
The community has since come together to mourn Deborah, remembering her kindness and bright spirit.
Candlelight tributes have been organized in her honor, and friends continue to share memories of the good times they had with her.
Her death has left a huge gap in the hearts of many, especially Geraldine, who says she still can’t believe her friend is gone.
“It feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from,” she wrote.
May Deborah’s soul rest in peace, and may her story remind everyone how fragile life truly is.
