Gachagua: DCP did not have a candidate in Mbeere North. I only went there to support Muturi’s DP

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence following the highly contested Mbeere North by-election, insisting that critics are celebrating too early and misunderstanding the real picture.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving Service at PCEA Kariobangi North on Sunday, November 30, Gachagua dismissed claims that his influence in national politics had suffered a fatal blow after the United Opposition’s loss.

Gachagua, who has become the face of DCP’s growing political footprint, clarified that his party was not officially battling for the Mbeere North seat.

According to him, the candidate he supported — Newton Karish — belonged to the Democratic Party (DP), not DCP. He insisted the defeat should not be linked to his party’s performance or future prospects.

“Don’t be bothered by what happened in Mbeere North,” Gachagua told the congregation.

“DCP didn’t have a candidate there. We had candidates in Kariobangi North, Narok Town and Kisa East, and we won. I just went to help DP in Mbeere North. They won, but the victory was denied. Our focus now is on DCP.”

The by-election was won by UDA’s Leonard Muthende, who garnered 15,802 votes against Karish’s 15,308.

While UDA celebrated the result as a demonstration of public rejection of “empty political rhetoric,” the United Opposition maintained that the contest was manipulated through bribery, violence and state-backed intimidation — claims the government dismissed.

Despite the setback in Mbeere North, Gachagua highlighted what he termed as a major political breakthrough for his newly formed party.

DCP, which is barely seven months old, clinched three ward seats in the latest mini-polls: Kariobangi North in Nairobi, Kisa East in Kakamega and Narok Town in Narok County.

He admitted that the party suffered narrow defeats in Purko and Magarini but still described the overall performance as a strong foundation for the future.

“A young party winning three out of five seats is a clear sign that Kenyans believe in us,” he said confidently.

“This is just the beginning.”

In a declaration that signals deeper political realignments ahead of 2027, Gachagua revealed that DCP had reached an understanding with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to dominate Nairobi’s political space.

According to the former Deputy President, the two leaders have agreed that DCP will field candidates for the governor, senator and woman representative positions.

Additionally, the party is preparing to run candidates in 16 out of 17 constituencies and 75 out of 88 wards.

“DCP is the party for Nairobi,” Gachagua proclaimed.

“The Kariobangi North win is the beginning of our politics in this city. We have planned everything well. Wiper will support us for the major seats.”

President William Ruto also weighed in on the by-elections, celebrating UDA’s win in Mbeere North and warning the opposition that their “lack of agenda” will lead to more losses in 2027.

Ruto described the results as an indicator that voters are tired of “slogans without solutions,” adding that Kenyans want leaders who can deliver on development, not politics of anger.

But Gachagua’s allies insist that the Mbeere North result was not a reflection of public opinion but of state interference, a narrative expected to dominate opposition rallies in the coming weeks.
