The body of a man who disappeared a week ago has been found inside the Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi, raising fears over safety at the ongoing construction site.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old construction worker Sammy Kyengo, was last seen on September 6.
His wife, Christine, had reported him missing after he failed to return home.
On Saturday morning, his body was discovered inside a water reservoir located behind the unfinished terraces of the stadium.
According to workers at the site, a colleague stumbled upon the body while preparing the area for plastering.
Police officers who responded confirmed that Kyengo had visible injuries at the back of his head and neck, with traces of blood coming from his nose and mouth.
Investigators moved the body to the Nairobi Funeral Home, and a postmortem will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
Christine, who is now left to care for their young family alone, revealed that her husband had complained about delayed wages before his disappearance.
“He told me the company had not paid them since July. He wanted to ask for his money and leave the job,” she said.
The incident has unsettled his colleagues, who expressed fear over what might have happened.
“If someone can go missing and later be found dead inside the same project we are working on, it puts all of us at risk,” said worker Ivan Bongo.
Relatives remembered Kyengo as a humble man who kept away from conflict.
His nephew, Paul Kioko, described him as a supportive guardian who paid his rent and school fees. “Now I do not know how I will continue with my education,” he lamented.
Following the discovery, authorities temporarily suspended work at the stadium to allow investigators to comb through the site for clues.
Detectives from Nairobi Area have recorded statements from workers as they piece together what might have led to the mysterious death.
