Siaya Governor James Orengo was forced to seek alternative transport in Nairobi's Central Business District after police fired teargas to disperse participants of a Gen Z memorial procession on today.
The governor was among several opposition leaders, activists, and families of victims who had gathered for a march to Parliament in remembrance of young Kenyans killed during the June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests.
Other prominent figures present included Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Chief Justice David Maraga.
Tension escalated when anti-riot police moved in and launched teargas canisters at the crowd as the procession advanced through the city centre.
Amid the confusion, Orengo was seen holding a Kenyan flag before climbing onto a motorcycle to navigate through the congested streets and continue toward Parliament.
The memorial march had been organised to honour victims of the 2024 demonstrations by laying flowers and wreaths at locations where protesters lost their lives.
Organisers maintained that the gathering was intended to be peaceful.
The incident unfolded as security agencies mounted a major operation across Nairobi.
The Parliament Buildings were heavily guarded with barbed wire and security barricades, while key roads leading to Parliament and the State House were restricted.
Major entry routes into the capital also experienced disruptions, causing severe traffic congestion and limiting movement within the CBD.
Several activists and protesters were reportedly arrested along Parliament Road and other parts of the city centre as police worked to prevent demonstrators from reaching protected government installations.
Businesses in parts of Nairobi remained closed or operated under heightened security amid fears of unrest.
Despite the restrictions, participants in the memorial events continued to call for justice and remembrance of those who died during the historic Gen Z protests that shook the country two years ago.
