Alego Usonga MP Samwel Atandi has sparked political debate after making controversial remarks directed at James Orengo ahead of the planned June 25 demonstrations.
Speaking in comments shared on social media, Atandi called on President William Ruto to hand over security operations to him for a day, saying he wanted an opportunity to deal with the "mzee from Siaya" a reference widely understood to mean Governor James Orengo.
"I request the president to hand over security operations to me on 25th June and have the police take orders from me. With many years of experience in demos, I would like to deal with the mzee from Siaya with finality, to clear his head of the maandamano mentality," Atandi said.
The remarks come amid rising political tensions over planned anti-government protests scheduled for June 25, with leaders from different political camps exchanging sharp statements over the demonstrations and the country's political direction.
Atandi, a vocal supporter of the Kenya Kwanza administration, has in recent months criticized opposition-backed protests, arguing that they disrupt economic activities and undermine stability. His latest comments appeared to target Orengo, who has often defended the constitutional right of Kenyans to hold peaceful demonstrations.
Governor Orengo, a veteran politician and former opposition stalwart, has consistently maintained that public protests are a legitimate democratic tool for citizens seeking accountability from leaders.
The MP's remarks have already generated reactions online, with supporters praising his hardline stance while critics have accused him of using inflammatory language against a fellow elected leader.
As the country approaches the June 25 protests, attention is likely to remain on the exchanges between government allies and opposition figures, with security agencies expected to play a key role in maintaining law and order during the demonstrations.
