The victim, identified as Oliver Wambua Nzuki, was reportedly on duty guarding about 13 shops at the market when the incident occurred on the night of April 10.
According to police reports, the matter came to light on the morning of April 11, 2026, after the elderly watchman was found lying unconscious with serious injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the attackers had attempted to break into a bar within the market but were unsuccessful.
Authorities believe the watchman may have confronted the suspects during the attempted break-in, which could have triggered the violent attack.
Good Samaritans rushed him to Kangundo Level IV Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, he later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
His body has since been moved to Kangundo Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
The incident has sparked concern among local traders and residents, many of whom rely on night watchmen for security in the busy market center.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the attackers and are following several leads to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
Authorities are also appealing to members of the public with any information that could assist in the investigations to come forward.
