Mwingi: Daylight Drama As Residents Are Caught On Camera Looting Somali-Owned Shops

Tension gripped Mwingi Town in Kitui County on Wednesday after videos surfaced showing residents storming and looting shops owned by Somali traders during the day.

The unrest followed growing anger over recent killings in Mwingi North and Mwingi Central, where eight people, among them a woman and a 14-year-old boy, were reportedly killed by suspected camel herders.

The deaths triggered protests, with demonstrators blocking the Mwingi to Garissa road and demanding swift action from authorities.

As the protests escalated, groups of people were seen running through parts of the town and breaking into businesses linked to Somali traders.

Several shops were targeted, forcing traders to flee and shut down their premises.

By Wednesday morning, most Somali-owned businesses, including supermarkets, restaurants, and small retail shops, remained closed.

Streets that are usually busy with trade recorded little movement as fear spread among business owners and customers.

The violence has further deepened long-standing tension between sections of the Kamba and Somali communities, with local leaders warning that revenge attacks could worsen the situation if urgent action is not taken.

Transport services were also affected, with some bus operators suspending trips between Nairobi and Garissa because of insecurity along the route through Mwingi.

Police officers were deployed across affected areas in an effort to restore calm and prevent more attacks.

However, some leaders criticised the response, saying security intervention came too late.

Residents are now calling for lasting peace measures and stronger protection for both lives and businesses as the town struggles to recover from the latest violence.
