Heavy Floods Hits Nairobi After Heavy Rainfall

Heavy overnight rainfall caused widespread flooding across Nairobi, leaving major roads and residential areas submerged and disrupting early morning transport.

Key sections in Utawala, Kariokor, Ruai bypass, and Seasons Road were among the worst affected as water levels rose rapidly.

In Utawala, residents woke up to flooded homes after a nearby stream burst its banks.

Water entered compounds and blocked access roads, forcing families to remain indoors as the situation worsened in the morning hours.

At Kariokor roundabout, drainage systems collapsed under the heavy rainfall, leading to stagnant and fast-moving floodwaters.

Pedestrians struggled to move through contaminated water while public transport operations were severely affected.

The Ruai bypass also experienced major disruptions after sections of the highway were submerged.

Vehicles stalled in deep water, leaving passengers stranded for hours as traffic buildup intensified along the busy route.

Seasons Road and surrounding areas in Clay City were rendered impassable, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

Commuters reported long delays as the city’s transport network struggled to cope with the flooding.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned that rainfall will continue in Nairobi and several other counties.

The advisory has raised concerns over further flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Transport services across the city were heavily affected as buses and private vehicles avoided flooded roads.

Many commuters experienced delays reaching workplaces and schools due to impassable routes.

Health concerns have also emerged in areas where floodwaters mixed with sewage, particularly around Kariokor.

Residents have been urged to avoid contact with contaminated water to reduce the risk of infections.

Authorities are monitoring affected areas as emergency response teams work to restore normalcy.

Residents in flood-prone zones have been advised to remain vigilant as weather conditions are expected to remain unstable.
