Former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba was on Wednesday arrested and locked in a cell at the Parliament Police Station under circumstances that sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the rule of law in Kenya.
According to information from those close to her, Orwoba was not only detained but was beaten up while in police custody.
What has added fuel to the fire is the claim that officers are now scheming on which offence to charge her with suggesting that the arrest came first, with the justification to follow later.
The situation was made more alarming by the fact that the High Court had previously ordered the Senate to reinstate Orwoba.
Despite this court order, the Senate Speaker, working alongside the Senate Clerk, appeared to have pushed back against the ruling.
The Senate Clerk's position has come under scrutiny, with claims that his contract has since expired and that he is currently operating in that office illegally.
Critics are now pointing to what they describe as a coordinated effort by powerful figures within the Senate to use the police to silence Orwoba and frustrate the court's directive.
Adding to the ordeal, her official vehicle was towed away and taken to an unknown destination, a move her allies have described as illegal and deeply troubling.
The arrest has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights defenders and political observers who see it as a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary and the rights of an elected official.
Orwoba was later released from police custody with the help of her lawyers. What do you have to say about this revelation by Orwoba? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
