On Sunday, “Sifuna usilale!” chants rocked Kitengela on Saturday as a mammoth crowd turned up for the Linda Mwananchi tour led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
This came days after President William Ruto, had just delivered a speech about his administration’s plans to help young people access more job opportunities.
After his remarks, the president opened the floor for a question-and-answer session with students. Among those invited to speak was Jevin Oloo, a student who did not hesitate to share his honest opinion.
Taking the microphone, Oloo began by thanking the president for the chance to speak. However, his tone quickly turned firm as he urged the head of state to pay close attention to the concerns of ordinary citizens.
“If leaders do not listen to voters, they might have to listen to the returning officer during the next election,” Oloo said, drawing loud cheers from fellow students.
He went on to explain that his remarks were not an attack on the Kenya Kwanza government but a reminder for the president to fulfill his promises.
Oloo added that many government engagements with citizens often seem like formalities, with little follow-through.
“We meet, we talk, but nothing much happens afterward. The problem is not you, Mr. President; it is the people working around you. They are the ones failing to deliver,” he told Ruto.
The bold student also urged the president to hold his team accountable and ensure that the promises made to Kenyans translate into real results. His direct approach won applause from the audience, who appeared to support his message.
This was not the first time a university student publicly confronted the president. In a separate incident last year, another student leader challenged Ruto during a town hall meeting in Nairobi, questioning the government’s commitment to addressing youth issues.
