“Gachagua Has No Plan for Mt Kenya, So What Do We Really Gain?” - Ngunjiri Wambugu Questions

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stirred political debate in Mount Kenya after declaring that President William Ruto is WanTam — meaning he will serve only one term — and that the community will “send him home” at the next elections.

Speaking to supporters, Gachagua insisted that the people of the region hold the power to decide whether Ruto remains in office beyond 2027.

His remarks have been seen as a direct challenge to the president’s authority.

He painted Ruto as a leader whose time is running out, telling his audience that Mt Kenya voters are prepared to take action if they feel shortchanged.

Supporters cheered as he promised that Ruto would not have an easy ride in the upcoming polls.

But former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has sharply dismissed Gachagua’s approach, warning that such slogans do little to solve the real issues facing the region.

In a statement shared on his social media pages on September 18, 2025, Wambugu argued that Gachagua is misleading the community by fixating on the WanTam narrative without showing how the region will benefit in the meantime.

According to Wambugu, even if Ruto serves just one term, the government is still in power for at least two more years.

He questioned what plan Gachagua has to ensure that Mount Kenya reaps development gains during this period.

“You cannot simply ask people to fire Ruto because you were fired. Where is the roadmap that secures our farmers, traders, and young people?” he posed.

Wambugu further cautioned that politics is unpredictable.

While Gachagua may wish Ruto to be a one-term president, it is equally possible that Ruto could extend his leadership.

In such a case, he asked, is the community ready to endure seven years without a concrete strategy?
