Political Earthquake as Gachagua Signals Alliance with Oburu, Intensifies Clash with Ruto

Kenya’s political scene is shifting fast after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua declared he is ready to work with Oburu Odinga and leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), in a move that could reshape future alliances.

Speaking to his supporters, Gachagua said he is open to joining forces with like-minded leaders to build a strong political front ahead of the 2027 General Election.

However, he made his position clear—any cooperation must exclude President William Ruto.

His statement has sparked widespread reactions, with many describing it as a bold political gamble.

Gachagua, now associated with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), said the country needs a new kind of unity focused on solving real problems facing ordinary citizens.

At the same time, he continued his criticism of Ruto, accusing the President of changing his political tone for convenience.

Gachagua claimed that for many years, Ruto strongly attacked Raila Odinga, but is now presenting him in a positive light while turning his attacks toward him.

He argued that such shifts show how political interests often change depending on who is seen as the main competitor.

According to Gachagua, he has now taken the position Raila once held as Ruto’s key rival, which explains the ongoing public attacks against him.

The former deputy president also addressed his past role in criticising Raila, admitting he took part but insisting he was following a broader campaign strategy.

He used a simple comparison, saying the campaign operated like a choir where leaders followed one main voice.

Despite the criticism surrounding his remarks, Gachagua stood firm and said he has no regrets.

He maintained that his statements were part of the political environment at the time and should be understood in that context.

His latest call for cooperation with ODM comes at a sensitive moment. Reports indicate that ODM is also exploring possible arrangements with allies of President Ruto, creating uncertainty about the party’s next move.

In regions such as Mount Kenya, where Ruto once enjoyed strong support, some residents are now paying closer attention to Gachagua’s message.

This growing interest could influence how political alliances are formed in the coming months.

Reactions remain divided. Supporters believe his move could unite opposition forces and offer a strong alternative leadership. Critics, however, see it as an attempt to rebuild his political base after leaving office.

Gachagua’s firm “no Ruto” stance has drawn a clear political line. As leaders begin positioning themselves for the next election, his declaration could trigger new alliances and fresh rivalries.

With tensions rising and loyalties shifting, Kenya is entering a new political phase where unexpected partnerships may define the road to 2027.
