Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned the government following a night operation at Gikomba Market that left traders counting heavy losses after their goods were destroyed.
In a sharply worded statement, Gachagua described the incident as “inhuman and beastly,” accusing the government of unleashing a night raid that targeted thousands of small-scale traders.
He claimed that property worth millions of shillings was destroyed, terming the operation a “cowardly” act driven by what he called a covert political scheme.
The former deputy president reminded the public of promises made during the 2022 General Election campaigns, where he and President William Ruto assured Kenyans that forced evictions and destruction of property—especially at night—would not occur under their administration. He now says those commitments have been broken.
Gachagua went further to link his controversial impeachment to what he described as his refusal to comply with alleged directives to carry out forceful evictions. According to him, the unfolding events validate his earlier stance against such operations.
In a direct attack on the Head of State, Gachagua accused President Ruto of being out of touch with ordinary Kenyans, particularly small-scale traders and farmers.
He alleged that the government is increasingly serving the interests of powerful cartels and corporate elites at the expense of vulnerable citizens.
He also criticised the involvement of Nairobi County leadership, claiming that the actions witnessed at Gikomba risk deepening public anger and eroding trust in government institutions.
Gachagua concluded by expressing solidarity with the affected traders, assuring them of support from what he termed as “the people of Kenya,” and called for accountability over the incident.
