Veteran politician Martha Karua has firmly ruled out any return to the National Assembly of Kenya, dismissing suggestions that she could take up a leadership role such as Speaker.
In a statement shared on her X account on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the People’s Liberation Party leader responded to a supporter who had urged her to consider leading the House.
The user argued that the country needs a firm and experienced Speaker to address what they described as weak and ineffective laws.
However, Karua was categorical in her response, stating that she has completely moved on from parliamentary politics.
“Thanks, but I’m done with @NAssemblyKE and have no wish to return to it in any capacity,” she wrote, effectively shutting down speculation about a possible comeback.
Karua’s remarks come at a time when conversations around legislative reforms and the effectiveness of Parliament have gained momentum across the country.
Critics have increasingly raised concerns about the quality of laws and oversight by lawmakers, sparking debate on the need for stronger leadership within the House.
Despite her refusal to return to Parliament, Karua remains a prominent voice in Kenya’s political space. The former long-serving legislator has consistently championed constitutionalism, accountability, and good governance.
She is also widely seen as one of the key figures in the opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election. In the 2022 polls, she served as running mate to Raila Odinga under the Azimio coalition.
Her latest stance signals a strategic shift, as she appears focused on pursuing higher office and influencing national leadership from outside the legislature.
